Workplace relationship

Workplace romance rarely, if ever, remains between two people. Soon the rumor mill will get started. There are a lot of “creeps” (both men and women) out there in our workplaces here in The Gambia now a days. Employees and Staff should not assume that everything will be fine. Yes, love happens. But so does hate. I implore my countrymen to keep the romance out of the workplace given the saga that has erupted at the SSHFC. Companies and Government departments should strongly discourage their staff and employees from involving themselves in relationships with colleagues that they manage or report to. Parastatals and government departments should update their policies to require all Chairmen and Board of Directors to disclose any inter-office relationships that might have a conflict of interest attached to the Parastatals or government institutions. Individual staff or employees should think about the ramifications of a workplace relationship. If the relationship didn’t work out, would you still be able to work with the person ? If it did go well, and one of you got promoted over the other, how would that impact things? HR policy, not only ones relating to office romance, should hold an annual company-wide meeting or forum to revisit rules to see if they still make sense and so that every employee can feels that they have a voice. If everyone decides that we want to have these hard and fast rules that there should be no dating in the workplace, then there you go, you have your policy, I do feel that there should be a broader discussion. It shouldn't just be up to one person to make that decision. The person you’re dating may already be in a committed relationship. Imagine the embarrassment of finding this out through a nasty phone call or email from a furious significant other ?

Special commission of inquiry

Barrow's government need to set up a special commission of inquiry to look into appointments, training and training related issues of government institutions and parastatals. So many dubious activities and nepotism has taken place and is still perpetuating. The brewing SSHFC case is just a tip of the iceberg. There is a needs for this issue to be addressed. A commission will have dig into family ties at our work places. Jobs, training and sponsorships are not given based on merits. There are so many cases where Senior Managers, Directors and Managing Directors bring in their sons and daughters into these institutions and parastatals thus creating more garbage output because they are not qualified and not fit for the jobs. They will go on to use public resources to get them trained and sponsored when they have not serve the number of years stipulated in the service rules before they can be considered for such trainings or promotions. You hardly see vacancies being advertised these days because they are filled at the back door gate

Optimism

Have you ever wondered why it is that some people who have huge intellectual ability fail miserably in life, while some who are not so gifted succeed gloriously? Or why some people can take knock after knock after knock, and still get up, dust themselves off, and get on with life - yet others are "down and out for the count" after the smallest challenge? Or how some people can fix their eyes on a goal and just never give up until they get there, no matter how long it takes? The answer to all the above lies in one word: attitude. Dr Martin Seligman has done a great deal of research, and found that one of the main factors that keeps people going through challenges, disappointments and the various disasters that life throws at us is optimism, and that (even for those who are natural pessimists) optimism can be learned in fact Dr Seligman himself confesses to being by nature a pessimist! Dr Seligman points out three main areas of difference between optimists and pessimists when faced with challenges, failures or opposition. The first concerns how they see the duration of the problem. The optimist sees it as temporary, the pessimist as permanent. If an optimist fails an exam, he will say "I failed that exam, but I will do well on the next one." The pessimist who fails an exam will say "I failed. I'm never going to pass this course." The second relates to the scope of the problem: the optimist sees it as affecting one are of life only, whilst the pessimist sees it as affecting everything. The optimist says, "I failed my history exam, but I did well in math." The pessimist says, "I failed. I'm never going to succeed in life." The third area concerns the cause of the problem. The optimist will look for causes outside of himself, the pessimist always sees himself as to blame. Optimist: "The exam asked about things that we had not covered in the course." Pessimist: "I'm just no good at history (and I never will be.)" The good news is that, with a little effort, we can change pessimistic attitudes into optimistic ones. To do it, we have to use our conscious mind to challenge the wrong perceptions and thought patterns that have hidden in our subconscious for many years. Lynn Fowler So, you have failed the history exam. The first thought that comes to your mind is "I'm never going to pass this course!" Immediately you recognize it, you say (out loud if possible) "STOP!" (Some people like to wear an elastic band around their wrist and flick it to grab their mind's attention.) Now challenge the assumption - simply tell yourself, "That's not true!" Present your mind with arguments to the contrary: "This was just one exam. I can make it up during the rest of the course." Maybe your second thought is, "I'm never going to succeed in anything." Again, STOP! Tell yourself this is not true. Tell yourself that this is only one very small area of your life, and that it has absolutely no bearing in the other areas. Even if you flunk this course miserably, you can still have a great life. If you find yourself thinking, "I'm a failure" or "I'm just hopeless" STOP! Tell yourself this is not true. Remind yourself of areas where you have known success, and where you have ability. It will seem strange at first, but after a while you will become quite adept at arguing with yourself! (Now, there is a sense in which taking it personally is good - when it relates to what we have done, rather than what we are. If the guy who failed the history exam had said, "I didn't study hard enough" then he would be taking responsibility for his own actions, which leaves him room to change his actions (i.e., study harder) in the future. But if he just says, "I'm no good at history" or "I'm not academically gifted" or "I'm just plain dumb!" then he is not taking responsibility, but rather blaming the "genetic lottery" that caused him to be as he is. If we are to succeed in any area of life - or, indeed, in life itself - we absolutely MUST be prepared to take responsibility for our own actions and their consequences.) Why is this important for your business? When it all boils down, we are sales people. We are seeking to "sell" others on the idea of joining our business. In the "real" world, sales people have to deal with refusals all the time. How they handle those refusals will determine their level of success, or whether they give up and walk away after a few months. As online business people, we don't have the face-to-face rejection that offline sales people do. But there will be days when you have been working hard and seem to see no result. There will be times when your business just does not seem to be growing at the rate you would like it to be. If you approach those times with a pessimistic attitude - that this will go on forever, that it will ruin every part of your life, and that it is all your own fault because you are just hopeless - then you will soon give up and walk away. On the other hand, if you are able to turn your thinking around to see that this is only temporary, that it only affects this little bit of your life, and that whilst there may be areas where you can improve (take responsibility) it is not the result of some fault in your nature, then whilst you may not be dancing in the aisles, you will keep on going. If you are prone to pessimistic responses, work on changing them to optimistic ones. You will find that not only your business but all your life will improve dramatically.

Managing Gambia' Waste

For many years now waste has been a huge and nagging problem in the Gambia’s urban areas. Currently, most of the waste generated in The Gambia is either burned, buried or thrown away. As a result, more than 90 percent of solid waste produced in Banjul and the Kombos ends up in landfills or gets dumped in water bodies. And as the country's population continues to rise, the waste problem will only get worse. So, what do we do with all the growing heaps of filthy waste before we find ourselves in the middle of the worst environmental crisis The country will ever known? Is it that our expert are not aware that the solution could be to convert waste into animal feed just like how it is done in South Africa and other countries..Our business men should be smart enough to set up businesses that can grow maggots from waste collected from markets, households and businesses. The maggots are then processed into a highly nutritious protein supplement that to be used as animal feeds. In other countries waste is converted into electricity. Those of you who probably has visited Addis Ababa know more than me that the Ethiopians has a waste recycling factory that produces over 50 megawatts of electricity from waste collected from across the city of Addis.and they supply over 2 million homes with electricity, and thus helping them avoid the release of millions of tons of CO2 to the atmosphere. I therefore implore budding Gambian entrepreneurs to be hard at work and try to squeeze out value from waste, and in the process, create an industry that could provide both low and high-level jobs for thousands of people.

West Africa's bread basket

Small-scale family farmers are the most important people in the Gambia. A group that numbers a vast majority of the population, but is nevertheless widely neglected by the public, the media and most importantly by the people and organisations who rule this country. Loads of initiatives from governments, industry and NGO’s are coming towards the small-scale farmers. They all want to provide them with new technologies or methods of industrialized farming. They want to sell them fertilizers and chemicals to protect their crops. Very few, however, are focused on education, information, and empowerment; Why not? The harsh answer is: most people in charge, most politicians, agricultural suppliers, and traders in this country, do not have the slightest interest in sharing power. And this is also the main reason why dictatorial regimes are so keen on controlling their educational systems, controlling the press and sharing the information about what’s really happening in the country. There’s simply no free press in a dictatorial regime because the people in charge are not willing to share their power, just as they are not willing to share their money. Gambia could become West Africa's bread basket. Yes, poverty is widespread. At least 80 percent of all Gambians live in rural areas, with 70 percent depending entirely on agriculture. Most of them depend on a small plot for their daily needs. The country, however, have over 60% of undeveloped farmland. And with some small efforts smallholder farmers can easily double, sometimes even quadruple their harvest. All that’s needed is knowledge and independent information for small scaled farmers. A sustainable development goal can be reached if small-scale family farmers in the Gambia, particularly women should be the most important focus group for governments and if that happen you may see the metamorphose of a country in need to a country of plenty.

Business Opportunities in The Gambia

Do you know that 1 in 4 Gambian students is enrolled in a private school, and this estimate will increase drastically within the next 10 years to come. Rapid population growth, poor funding, corruption and neglect have caused a serious deterioration in the quality of education in our public schools. As a result, more Gambian parents are looking to private schools to ensure their kids get a good education. And the demand for this alternative is skyrocketing. And this trend of low-cost private education is leading foreign entrepreneurs to exploit the inherent business opportunity therein while Gambians entrepreneurs continue to sleep..I believe if Gambian business men and women were to enter the low-cost private education space in the Gambia, I suspect the fierce competition will improve the quality of education, drive down school fees, and afford many children the chance of a decent education.

Area Councils in The Gambia

The Precedent has been set; In the past few weeks or months we have seen an unprecedented good performance by the interim Area Council here in The Gambia administrators. This should continue; The masses cannot and should not allow few individuals to control and destroy the councils anymore. Always remember we are Powerful when we are unified; Locusts, or grasshoppers by themselves are not powerful, but when they get together in a huge swarm, they are formidable! This is an illustration of strength in unity. When people band together in unity and cooperation, things get done. Locusts also don’t really have a leader, but they somehow understand when it is necessary to band together, and “march in rank.” so to speak. As the proverb goes: ''The locusts have no king, Yet all of them go out in ranks''

I know security companies in my country would not like this but who cares? They are exploiting my fellow youths! They will employ them, post them to guard compound gates of Expat and other foreigns residents and pay them D2000 ($90) while they would be charging the expats D10000 ($200).

ARE YOU WORRIED OF A THIRD WORLD WAR

It looks like the world's superpowers are drawing a line in the sand in Syria with each country choosing what side of the line to be on. On one side, there is the U.S., the U.K., France, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and much of the NATO alliance. On the other side of the line, there is Russia, Iran, Syria, and now China. It seems like it has become the democracies of the world against the dictators of the world and that the final outcome has yet to be decided. The dictators are afraid of what will happen if their respective citizens rise up and challenge their authority, and by helping each other out, they see this as an opportunity to stand united in the hopes of maintaining that power. The democracies hope that by taking a stand in Syria, they will prevent the dictators from expanding their influence further westward. Following WW2, the world was divided into democracies and communists, and it seems like nothing has changed since then. The world had a period of calm between 1990-2000 because of the uncertainty in Russia, but when Putin took over as President of Russia, things changed dramatically not only in Russia, but for countries that bordered Russia. It has now ended up with the west facing off against the dictators of the world in Syria, and it seems like the world waits to see what the end results will be. Let's hope that all the countries involved see that no good will come to either side if there is a war, and that diplomacy is the best way to make this world a safer place for all..
